#92 – June 12, 2019 – Preparing the Soil!

Dear Friends,

A lot of planning and preparation goes into establishing a large garden, and the dera gardening volunteers have been at it for months.

Back in the gloomy days of winter, they created a (long!) list of vegetables to grow this year, and ordered the seeds.
When the time was right, each variety of vegetable seed was planted in a container, and nurtured through the late winter and spring. The result is many hundreds of sturdy little seedlings that have been given every possible advantage (rich potting soil, water, nutrients, warmth, sunshine, and TLC!) to prepare them for life in a northern Wisconsin garden.

More tilling ….

There was a lot of soil to till!

Rewarded with a rest under the lovely garden pine tree, after hours of tilling.

And then, barrows full of rich, dark compost are prepared for the garden.

Each plant will get a carefully prepared mound of compost to call home.

In the next blog, it’s time to plant those happy little seedlings!

With warmest regards,
