The ponds allow the water to slowly soak into the ground. During the rainy season, the pools are full of water, but during an extended drought they may completely dry up. The largest infiltration basin on the construction site lies along the eastern edge of the parking lot.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In this photo, taken last summer as the large basin was being built, a rainstorm has filled the pond with muddy water.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"C966E661-43FB-45D0-B313-899B0798A5F1\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/1-Infiltration-basin-after-rain-2016.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The basins were all lined with fiber, erosion-control blankets that greatly reduce soil erosion, and encourage the growth of native plants.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"2B9F886A-7DC7-4611-99D0-0D5CBD865E63\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2-Infiltration-basin-with-blankets-2016.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This year, the Meeting Hall site received lots of summer rain, keeping the infiltration basins wet through the entire year. Mother Nature responded by sending a breathtaking abundance of life! &nbsp;By mid-summer, the ponds were surrounded by lush grasses and other plants, and the water teemed with aquatic life such as tadpoles.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"CFCB85AD-EB51-40A2-8237-B9DFC1D09174\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/3-Infiltration-basin-Sept2017.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"72A0FF2A-6CD6-4DF3-B3A2-0EFA281F04C4\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/4-Infiltration-basin-2017.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">These lovely, tall, native Iris plants, known as Blue Flag&nbsp;<span class=\"\">(<i class=\"\">Iris versicolor<\/i>),<\/span><span class=\"\">&nbsp;showed up on their own.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"52F12A9C-8AE3-4D36-848E-EEB49E456D24\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/5-Infiltration-basin-closeup-2017.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you visit the site next spring, you will likely see Blue Flag in bloom.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BEC4AC06-E9DB-4D2A-AD28-9A6C2F34FCF3\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Blue-Flag-iris-blooming.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Sedges are flowering plants&nbsp;that resemble&nbsp;grasses&nbsp;and&nbsp;rushes. The family is large, with some 5,500 known species. This unknown species of sedge sprouted along the banks of the pond, and we can look forward to seeing their flowers in the spring.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"B256033C-D3F9-43DE-853E-4E962B252C4A\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/6-Infiltration-basin-Blue-Flag-sedge.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In September, to increase the&nbsp;biodiversity of the pond, sevadars transplanted two other varieties of plants from a nearby pond, including water lilies<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"C32C5BA1-1ECA-4A1E-9AE8-65A7466A7A58\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/7-Infiltration-basin-transplanting.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And here, a joyful sevadar is planting broadleaf arrowhead (<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sagittaria_latifolia\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sagittaria_latifolia<\/a>), a native plant also known as duck-potato, Indian potato, and wapato. Arrowhead produces edible tubers that were an important food source for the native peoples of the region. Anyone for a side dish of saut\u00e9ed duck-potato at the next Mitti Seva lunch?<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"E3178824-E175-4380-A197-11BA5B689F6B\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ishanews.org\/ishwarsprojects2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/8-Infiltration-basin-Eugene-transplanting.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Several light snows have already blanketed the Meeting Hall site. Here\u2019s what the large pond looked like last week.
